Session I - Question 1

Session I - Question 1:  What do you hope to gain/learn while participating in this book study?

  1. My hopes for this book study is really to learn how to relate to my GT kids better. I do not feel like I do a bad job relating to them, however I know that there is always room for improvement. I know that this book will not help me learn techniques and specific TEKS that I can take me back to my classroom and implement to encourage my kids to reach higher, but maybe it will help me to remember that they require different types of motivation and encouragement than my on level kids. These studies always help me to further understand the struggles that my GT kids face, which I tend to forget or overlook because I have "Bigger problems to deal with at the moment". Learning to understand the thinking and the way my GT kids process information will help make my classroom a safer, more comfortable learning environment for everyone. I believe once I can meet their social and emotional learning needs then they will be able to produce at their highest possible potential.

  2. I was excited for this book as it is focused specifically on the Middle School GT student. Middle School is a far different student from elementary or even high school. Adding in the GT component can certainly make things challenging and interesting! As a middle school GT teacher, it seems I am not only teaching and fostering the student, but the parents as well. A majority of parents of this age group come to school wanting answers as to “Why is my kid . . .?” The GT parent, like their student, wants immediate fixes and answers when sometimes the process requires patience and understanding. I am looking forward to the chapter on Gender and the Gifted Adolescent as this past year highlighted those differences for me.
My hope is to refresh my understanding of the spectrum of issues that GT students may experience while in my class, to gain more tools for instruction and differentiation, and to dialogue with other readers to add to my comprehension of the book.

My hope for this book study is to discover how I can structure my class to differentiate more and especially meet the needs of my gifted students. I would like to learn some new strategies that will provide the rigor and depth needed to challenge this group of students within my classes. I want to learn more about how to foster my gifted students' talents while giving them the needed support that will encourage their growth. This is a great opportunity to broaden my understanding of the unique needs of my gifted students. Hopefully, I will start the new school year with some fresh new ideas to work with this group.

  5. I am hoping to gain a better understanding of how to challenge my GT students in the classroom so that they do not become apathetic toward learning. Knowing how and when to use certain accommodations with certain students would be very helpful. I am excited to read about some strategies that I will be able to incorporate into various lessons and activities that are effective in reaching my GT students. I want these students to be able to grow in my class, not just attend. Most importantly, I am hopeful to learn more about how GT students think, interact, and how I can be an effective teacher for them.

  6. I am hoping from this book study I will be able to gain a deeper connection with my GT kids. Any new strategy I learn is a benefit. I also want to have more insight when meeting with parents about the academic goals of my GT students I also am glad that there is a section on STEM that refers to science. So many times GT material focuses on reading/ writing and this will help me have some practical tools to use when teaching science to GT students.

  8. I'm hoping to gain more insight into the varied personalities of my GT kids. I'm also hoping to get more tools for my belt that will aid me in dealing with those personalities that can change at the drop of a hat. I'm also hoping to gain knowledge that will help me with the GT child who calls me Dad.

  9. I want to gain a greater understanding on how to better address the needs of gifted middle school students with the resources we have available. An obvious concern is ensuring that they be continually challenged academically but we also need to look at their socio-emotional development. (PV)

  10. I am hoping to gain a better understanding of how I can effectively challenge the GT students in my class. By creating lessons that can connect, appeal, and push the GT student in multiple directions and many possible outcomes. In that way, the lesson becomes more than a one answer idea but a way to look at a topic from various points/sources and still be correct. Hopefully, allowing the GT students to be individual risk takers that are able and confident to stand by their views.
